  • LA Councilman Vows to Turn City Into  New California Life-Science Anchor
Greig Smith (photo right), the Republican Chairman of the Los Angeles City Council's Jobs, Growth and Business Tax Reform Committee, conceded that the City of Los Angeles is unlikely any time soon to draw a concentration of life-sci employers comparable to those in the Bay Area or San Diego. But Smith, who represents part of the western San Fernando Valley on the 15-member Los Angeles City Council, told BioRegion News the City has several ingredients for developing its own life-sci supercluster: The presence of academic research institutions, one biotech giant, and large swaths of industrial land suitable for redevelopment ... Read more

  • Gene Sequencing Instrument Facilitates New Research at UCSB; Program Will Include Study of Human Embryonic Stem Cells
A new piece of equipment  at UC Santa Barbara will enable large-scale genomic sequencing to be performed in the Santa Barbara area. The "next generation" instrument, purchased by UCSB's Neuroscience Research Institute (NRI), has many different applications, according to Kenneth S. Kosik, M.D. (photo right), Harriman Chair in Neuroscience Research, professor of molecular, cellular, and developmental biology, and co-director of the NRI. The study of human embryonic stem cells is among the most important ways the sequencer will be applied. "This is a rather novel use for the instrument," said Dr. Kosik, who added that the sequencer "will serve as the cornerstone of genomics research here at UCSB. It allows us to do state-of-the-art work" .... Read more

  • Cameron Health (San Clemente)
Its internal external defibrillator may offer a safer way to jump-start ailing hearts
Six people in New Zealand have become the first to be implanted with a novel form of cardiac defibrillator that could radically change the way that people with life-threatening heart conditions are treated. The new device, developed by Cameron Health, in San Clemente, CA, functions much as normal defibrillators do, shocking the heart to stop dangerous heart rhythms or to restart it if it stops beating. But unlike traditional devices--which are known as implantable cardioversion defibrillators, or ICDs--Cameron's device delivers a shock from outside the heart rather than from electrical leads inserted into it.... Read more
