SoCalBio Networking Forum Explores Growth
Opportunities in the Orthopedic Device Market

Moderated by SoCalBio Board Member Maynard Carkhuff of Freedom Innovations, this event featured two orthopedic device companies -- Bioplate and Interventional Spine -- which shared with attendees their product development plans and views of how the Los Angeles/Orange County area offer resources to build competitive advantages in this sub-segment of the medical device market.

The orthopedic device market is expected to grow significantly to reach $20 billion by 2011. The SoCalBio territory -- Los Angeles, Orange county and neighboring communities -- is home to about 15 entrepreneurial firms, such as Interventional Spine and Bioplate, that operate in this device space. These firms offer products ranging from biological implants (Clearant in Los Angeles and Pagasus Biologics in Irvine) to bone fixation, spine fusion and joint reconstruction devices (TriMed in Valencia, Poly 5 Group in Goleta, TMJ Solutions in Ventura and Allez Spine in Irvine).
