  • Southern California Stem Cell Lab Construction Bonanza
On May 7, the board of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), the state’s stem cell agency, voted to distribute $271 million to 12 research institutions for the purpose of building stem cell facilities throughout California. These institutions committed an additional $560 million from charitable donations and their internal reserves, bringing the total statewide investment in new research space to $831 million. When faculty recruitment cost is added, the total to be spent in the near future on stem cell research facilities will exceed $1 billion. The table below shows that Greater Los Angeles institutions -- USC, UCLA, UCI and UCSB -- will invest about $321 million in building their stem cell research capabilities. USC leads the pack with expected spending of $142.61 million on building and staffing its stem cell center.
