  • Mr. Michael Weingarten, Director of the National Cancer Institute's SBIR and STTR; program will address the SoCalBio Investor Conference on September 19 about the recently launched "Bridge Award" Phase II funding program to support the commercializing of SBIR-financed project. Interested conference attendees will be granted private meetings with Mr. Michael Weingarten and/or Dr. Ali Andalibi - the Program Director of the NCI SBIR Development Center.

Recent Financings

  • Microfabrica Inc., a new SoCalBio member (see above) and developer of micro-devices for medical, electronic and defense applications, has raised $22.5 million in Series B funding. Versant Ventures and Interwest Partners co-led the round, and was joined by return backers Draper Fisher Jurvetson, DynaFund Ventures, Chevron Technology Ventures and Partech International. The company has now raised around $62 million in total VC funding since its 2000 founding as MemGen.
  • Glaukos Corp. (Laguna Hills), a developer of devices for the treatment of glaucoma, has raised $35 million in Series D funding. OrbiMed Advisors was joined by return backers Frazier Healthcare Ventures, InterWest Partners, Domain Associates, Fjord Ventures, Montreaux Equity Partners and Versant Ventures. The company had previously raised around $53 million since 2001
  • LifeModeler, Inc. of San Clemente Announced Successful Multi-Million Dollar Private Offering. The company offers software that allows product designers to perform "virtual prototyping" prior to undertaking expensive physical prototype development. The company's LifeMODŽ human simulation tool is used by the orthopedic joint replacement community, and in automotive, aerospace, and sporting goods applications.
