NIH Challenge Grants
Stimulus Opportunities for Small Bioscience Businesses 

Apply now for NIH Challenge Grants (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/ guide/rfa-files/RFA-OD-09-003. html), a unique opportunity to receive up to $500,000 per year total cost for two years. The NIH anticipates funding 200 or more grants, each up to $1 million in total costs. Act quickly because your applications are due on or before April 27, 2009. Awards will be unusually quick also. Peer review occurs in June or July 2009, Council review in August 2009, and award in September or October 2009.

MannKind Asks FDA to Approve Inhaled Insulin
 
On March 16, MannKind (Valencia, CA) announced that it has submitted a new drug application for the use of Afresa in adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The drug is intended to control hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar levels. Afresa is designed to be taken after meals through an inhaler. It is intended to dissolve immediately upon reaching the lungs. MannKind said that allows insulin levels to peak in 12 to 14 minutes, similar to the way insulin is released in non-diabetics... Read more
