UCLA
scientists Study How
Interlukin 21 Keeps Chronic
Infection in Check
The research team led by
David Brooks (photo right),
assistant professor of
microbiology, immunology and
molecular genetics at the
UCLA David Geffen School of
Medicine, looked at two
types of T-cells - CD4
T-cells and CD8 T-cells -
which are immune cells that
play an important role in
the body's response to
infection. The CD4 T-cells
help the immune system by
producing IL-21 during
chronic infection,
bolstering the CD8 T-cells'
ability to fight off the
virus... Read

Santa Barbara Research Team
Sheds Light on Inner
Workings of Human Embryonic
Stem Cells; Findings
Expected to Help Cancer
Research
"We have found an
element in the cell that
controls 'pluripotency,'
that is the ability of the
human embryonic stem cell to
differentiate or become
almost any cell in the
body," said lead
researcher Kenneth Kosik
(photo right), professor in
the Department of Molecular,
Cellular & Developmental
Biology. Kosik's research
shows that a microRNA -- a
single-stranded RNA whose
function is to decrease gene
expression -- lowers the
activity of three key
ingredients in the recipe
for embryonic stem cells.
This microRNA is known as
miR-145. The discovery may
have implications for
improving the efficiency of
methods designed to
reprogram differentiated
cells into embryonic stem
cell-like cells .... Read
