SoCalBio Mourns the Loss of  Vytas Pazemenas
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Vytas Pazemenas, Founder, President & CEO of SoCalBio member company the Aubrey Group (Irvine, CA), who lost his battle with cancer on October 23. A remembrance and celebration of his life and career will be held on November 15, 2009, at Balboa Yacht Club in Corona del Mar. Vytas was a generous supporter of SoCalBio and a tireless promoter of our region's biomedical community. He will be greatly missed. Calimmune, Inc. of Pasadena, Calif. in Collaboration with Irvin Chen of UCLA Win a $19.9 Million Grant from CIRM
 
This group proposes to treat HIV/AIDS using an RNA interference approach to modify the patient's blood-forming stem cells. When transplanted back, those cells will produce T cells that are resistant to HIV infection. This is part of a new round of funding totaling $250 million by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). States Sue Amgen for Alleged Kickbacks to Doctors
 
In a lawsuit filed last Friday, New York and other states say that Amgen provided free samples of Aranesp to doctors and clinics by putting tiny extra amounts of the drug in each vial. The medical practices could then make a profit by billing insurers, including state Medicaid programs, for the extra drug... Read more

Watson Names a New CFO
 
The Corona-based generic pharma maker announced that R. Todd Joyce has been named Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) effective immediately. Mr. Joyce succeeds Mark W. Durand, who has departed as CFO for personal reasons.
