Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Approve Plans to Build a "Biotech Incubator" on the USC Health Sciences Campus

The Board of Supervisors directed the county's Chief Executive Officer to begin negotiations with Momentum LA (a wholly owned non-profit corporation of Momentum Biosciences, LLC) to produce a dynamic biotechnology environment within the LAC-USC Medical Center and USC Health Sciences campus. UCLA Engineer Invents World's Smallest, Lightest Telemedicine Microscope


The microscope, unveiled in a paper published online in the journal Lab on a Chip, builds on imaging technology known as LUCAS (Lensless Ultra-wide-field Cell Monitoring Array platform based on Shadow imaging), which was developed by Aydogan Ozcan, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science and a researcher at UCLA's California NanoSystems Institute.... Read more

Electronic Tactile Vest Aids Movement in Rehab Patients

Researchers at UCLA's Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional Technology (CASIT) are developing a wearable, balancing vest that uses tactile sensors to correct the movement of rehabilitation patients whose sense of balance has fallen to injury or disease. Accelerometers on the shoulders detect body rotation and tilt, while the vest-based control system provides almost instantaneous feedback of incorrect leaning. Pneumatic actuators adjust the inflation of various 2.5cm silicone balloons embedded in the vest, applying specific pressures onto the wearer to correct movement.... Read more

$20B Med Device Tax to Stir M&A, Increase Hospital Costs

Some smaller medical device makers are worried about the effects of a $20 billion, 10-year tax on the industry to help pay for recently enacted healthcare reform. Principal Systems Development Engineer:Provide technical leadership of hardware and software design. BS in EE or software and minimum of 7 years experience. Specific experience with complex medical devices, project leadership, knowledge of embedded software and low power microelectronic systems. 

Senior Quality Engineer:Experienced with quality standards for medical devices. Manufacturing and validation process support, design specifications, CAPA, supplier quality, and auditing. Strong knowledge of FDA and ISO requirements. BS, 6-10 years experience in medical devices, pharma or equivalent. 

Senior Development Engineer, Mechanical:Senior contributor to product development team. BS in Mechanical, 12 years medical device R&D experience or equivalent. Experience within an FDA regulated environment. Experience with high volume product manufacturing desirable. 

Principal Manufacturing Engineer:Senior contributor providing technical leadership. Critical input on designs and methods of manufacturing complex medical devices. BS in Mechanical or equivalent, MS preferred. Minimum 7 years experience with complex medical devices.
