Edwards Awarded $73.5M in Medtronic Patent Case

The Irvine-based Edwards Biosciences said in a press release that the jury found that Medtronic's CoreValve business willfully infringed on a patent that relates to an artificial valve that is implanted through a catheter. Edwards said it will ask for a permanent injunction that would block Medtronic from selling the Sapien valve -- which has not been approved -- in the U.S... Read more

Two Pasadena Bioscience Companies Secure $24 Million in Equity Investment

Recent SEC filings show that two Pasadena, Calif.-based bioscience companies, Aliva Biopharmaceuticals and Materia, Inc. have secured $12.8 million and $11.7 million in institutional funding respectively. Both companies are Caltech spinoffs. Aliva is developing animal systems for accurate prediction in human drug profiling at the pre-clinical stage with its BAC (Bacterial Artificial Chromosome) based genome engineering technology. Materia is utilizing olefin metathesis technology to develop pharmaceutical intermediaries, renewable based chemicals, specialty materials and commodity plastics.

Reverse Medical Corporation Successfully Completes Series B Financing

The Irvine-based company raised $14 million from new investors Wexford Capital, Getz Bros., BioStar Ventures, Early Stage Partners and Emergent Medical Partners. Current investors NBGI Ventures, MedFocus Funds and South Australian Life Science Advancement Partnership also participated in this financing... Read more

Allergan and Serenity Pharmaceuticals Enter into Global Agreement for the Treatment of Nocturia

Under the terms of the agreement, Allergan receives exclusive worldwide rights to develop, manufacture and commercialize Ser-120, a Phase III investigational drug currently in clinical development for the treatment of nocturia, a common yet often under-diagnosed urological disorder in adults characterized by frequent urination at night time. The agreement encompasses all potential indications except Primary Nocturnal Enuresis (pediatric bedwetting). Allergan will make an upfront payment to Serenity of $43 million, potential development and regulatory milestone payments of up to $122 million, future potential sales milestones, and royalty payments on worldwide sales.... Read more
