Roberta Diaz Brinton of USC Science Technology and Research Program Honored at White House
Brinton who serves as director of USC Science Technology and Research Program, was presented with the prestigious 2010 Presidential Citizens Medal by President Barack Obama in a ceremony at the White House on Aug. 4. Brinton was recognized for work in improving science and technology education for students in Los Angeles through the USC Science Technology and Research program, known as STAR, for the last 22 years. A recent report by the Kauffman Foundation highlights the essential role of startups in job creation. The current focus of economic policy in America is on how to create more jobs. With the latest estimate of the unemployment rate at 9.5 percent, among the highest rates in decades and without much indication of decline anytime soon, this focus is not misplaced. | FDA Suggests Changes to 510(k)
Last week, the FDA released two "preliminary" sets of recommendations that aim to "focus on innovation, regulatory predictability, and patient safety." The agency said the recommendations aim to "strengthen and clarify" the 510(k) review process, and "seek to strike the right balance between the ability" to deal with "new science ... and to provide predictable regulatory pathways."
