Edwards Lifesciences' New Device Promises To Make Heart Surgery Easier And Safer

More than 200,000 Americans a year need a new heart valve to treat conditions like severe aortic stenosis, a narrowing of the valve that restricts blood flow from the heart. But half don't get it, often because they're too old or sick to risk open-heart surgery. Edwards Lifesciences is trying to change that. The Irvine, Calif.-based medical device company has developed a transcatheter heart valve, or THV, that uses a less-invasive procedure.... Read more

Teva, Amgen Duke It Out Over Generic Biotech
 
Teva Pharmaceuticals went ahead and ran clinical trials on a biotech drug that's a whole lot like Amgen's Neupogen, a $900 million drug used to stimulate the growth of white blood cells. The FDA has agreed to take a look at Teva's application. But, Teva and Amgen are also duking it out in court, with Amgen arguing that the Teva drug infringes on an Amgen patent.... Read more

Agilent Sheds Hycor Biomedical
 
Private equity firm Linden LLC has paid an undisclosed sum to purchase the Garden Grove-based Hycor Biomedical business of Agilent Technologies. Hycor, which specializes in allergy, autoimmune, and urinalysis diagnostics, became part of Agilent through that firm's 2007 acquisition of Stratagene. Hycor had only been part of Stratagene for a few years before the deal with Agilent. ... Read more
