Doctors at UCI Study Stomach Balloon for Weight Loss

The device (graphic right) is scheduled to undergo its first U.S. clinical trial starting this spring among 30 patients at three medical centers, including UCI.. AVANIR Pharmaceuticals Announces Issuance of New U.S. Zenvia Patent

The Aliso Viejo-based firm announced a new patent for its lead drug candidate Zenvia (dextromethorphan/quinidine), extending the period of patent protection in the United States into late 2025. U.S. patent number 7,659,282 titled "Pharmaceutical Compositions Comprising Dextromethorphan and Quinidine for the Treatment of Neurological Disorders" was issued on February 9, 2010. The new patent will provide AVANIR with patent protection for low-dose quinidine formulations of Zenvia used to treat pseudobulbar affect (PBA). ... Read more

Clarient Launches New Lung Cancer Test

The Aliso Viejo-based firm announced the commercial launch of a new lung cancer test, Clarient Insight Dx Pulmotype Test, that helps physicians classify specific types of lung cancer to identify which therapies may be most effective. The new test has been clinically validated to use in the sub-classification of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which accounts for approximately 85 percent of the more than 200,000 lung cancer cases diagnosed each year.... Read more
