| BIO and Battelle Release a New Report on the State of the Bioscience Industry in the U.S. During the BIO 2010 Convention in Chicago
The report -- entitled "State Bioscience Initiatives 2010" -- provides key statistics about the growth of the various sub-segments of the bioscience industry: drugs, devices, research/testing/medical laboratories, and ag/bio. The report's key funding is that the overall bioscience industry employment base has continued to grow even during the first year of the recession (2008)." This growth is attributable to the medical device industry and companies engaged in R&D and medical testing. The report is one of a kind because it provides regional profiles of the bioscience industry. One of the report's finding is that Los Angeles/Orange County and adjacent communities saw job growth from about 66,000 in 2004 to about 83,000 in 2008 (the last year for which data are currently available).... | Caltech Biologists Link Gut Microbial Equilibrium to Inflammatory Bowel Disease
"It has been proposed that the coupled equilibrium between potentially harmful and potentially beneficial bacteria in the gut mediates health versus disease," says Sarkis K. Mazmanian, assistant professor of biology at Caltech. "If the balance is altered," say, by changes in diet, the effects of stress, or the use of antibiotics, "then the immune response in the intestines is also changed." This altered host-microbe relationship, called dysbiosis, has been linked to Inflammatory Bowel Disease and colon cancer as well as to obesity and diabetes.... Read more
