Childrens Hospital Los Angeles Discovers a New Method to Overcome Radiation Resistance in Leukemia

B-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common cancer occurring in children and adolescents.  Despite having received intensive chemotherapy, some patients have recurring disease, known as relapse.  For these individuals, the prospect of long-term survival is poor. A team of researchers lead by Fatih M. Amgen Drug May Block Some Breast Cancer, Studies Hint

Mice with breast cancer fueled by the hormone progesterone had their tumors shrink when a protein called RANK ligand was blocked, according to a study by Amgen researchers published in the journal Nature. RANK ligand plays a key role in bone regeneration and is the target of denosumab, a drug that Amgen has made the focus of the biggest development program in its history... Read more 

Transcatheter Aortic-Valve Implantation (TAVI) Reduces Mortality Rate Compared to Standard Therapy

The New England Journal of Medicine reported this month that, for patients with severe aortic stenosis who are not candidates for surgery, Transcatheter Aortic-Valve Implantation (TAVI) using the Edwards SAPIEN valve significantly reduced mortality compared to standard treatment. At one year, the rate of death from any cause was 30% with TAVI vs. 50.7% with standard treatment.
