Patent Reform Passes the US House of Representatives

 

 Last week, the US House of Representatives passed a patent-reform bill supported by the Biotechnology Industry Organization and many affiliated regional bioscience associations including SoCalBio. The House bill, H.R. 1249, aka the "America Invents Act", passed on Thursday with a vote of 304-117. A nearly identical bill, S. 23, passed the Senate in March by an even more lopsided margin of 95-5. One major reform in both the House and Senate versions of the bill is a change from the current "invented first" system to a "filed first" system... Studies Show No Increased Risk of Cardiac Events in Diabetes Patients Treated with MannKind's AFREZZA

"In response to the recent concern over the cardiovascular risk of diabetes therapies, it is important to carefully analyze all trials and maintain an ongoing program of safety surveillance," said Anders H. Allergan Receives FDA Approval for First-of-Its-Kind, Fully in vitro, Cell-Based Assay for BOTOX and BOTOX Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) 

The newly approved assay will be implemented immediately for release of product for sale in the United States. Allergan estimates that use of the new assay will reduce the use of animal-based assay testing for BOTOX and BOTOX Cosmetic by up to 95 percent or more over the next three years, as other regulatory agencies around the world approve this new assay ... Patent No. 7,939,090, entitled "System and method for the treatment of cancer, including cancers of the central nervous system," covers the combination of a dendritic cell based vaccine combined either before or concurrently with chemotherapy at the recurrence of the disease. The Northridge-based Avita announced it has closed the placement of its capital raising announced on 17 May 2011. The Company raised a total of AUD$9 million at an issue price of $0.10 per share. The placement was managed by Wilson HTM, with shares placed with Australian and international institutions together with sophisticated and professional investors.
