UCLA Spinoff Kite Pharma Raises $15 Million

 

The Los Angeles-based Kite's early clinical-stage anticancer candidate is an engineered virus-based alpha fetoprotein (AFP) vaccine designed to stimulate an immune response against AFP-expressing hepatocellular cancer. A Phase I/II clinical trial is currently under way. The Phase I component of the trial will monitor the toxicity of escalating doses of the engineered virus in order to identify a tolerable dose for the Phase II component and future studies. The Monrovia-based Xencor announced positive results from preclinical studies of XmAb®5871, a humanized monoclonal antibody that dually targets CD19 and CD32b (FcγRIIb) for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, demonstrating that XmAb5871 is a potent suppressor of B cell activation ex vivo and of autoimmune response in humanized mouse models. Researchers concluded that XmAb5871 may be an effective immunosuppressant in multiple in vivo settings including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and can globally suppress autoimmune response without B cell depletion.
