  • UCLA Study Links Air Pollution to Clogged Arteries
This is a new UCLA study led by Andre Nel, Chief of Nanomedicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine, linking diesel exhaust to atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, which significantly increases one’s risk for heart attack and stroke. Published in the July 26 edition of the online journal Genome Biology, the findings are the first to explain how fine particles in air pollution conspire with artery-clogging fats to switch on the genes that cause blood vessel inflammation and lead to cardiovascular disease.

  • UCI Scientist Gary Lynch and His Colleagues Unveil the 'Face' of a New Memory
Detailed in recent issue of the Journal of Neuroscience, the study shows that synaptic connections in a region of rats' brains critical to learning change shape when the rodents learn to navigate a new, complex environment. In turn, when drugs are administered that block these changes, the rats don't learn, confirming the essential role the shape change plays in the production of stable memory.
  • Contributions from UC Riverside Biologist, David Reznick, Support a Controversial Theory of Genetic Conflict in Reproduction
Part of the significance of the research is in providing experimental proof of a theory put forth in the 1990s proclaiming that, in animals with a placenta, genetic material from the father and the mother promote different growth rates in the embryo, producing a conflict over nutrients.
