Wins a $5.6 Million Grant to Meld Life and Computer Sciences
The funding will be used to expand the interdisciplinary Biomedical
Informatics Training (BIT) program, an initiative led by IGB Director
and Chancellor’s Professor Pierre Baldi (right) and Professor G. Wesley
Hatfield (left) to train graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the
UCI Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS), The
Henry Samueli School of Engineering, and the schools of physical
sciences, biological sciences, and medicine.

Researchers Identify Biological Markers That May Predict Diabetes in
Still Healthy People
Reporting in the Aug. 15 issue of the
journal Archives of Internal Medicine, principal investigator Dr.
Simin Liu (right), professor of epidemiology and medicine with a joint
appointment at the UCLA School of Public Health and the David Geffen
School of Medicine at UCLA, and colleagues have identified three
inflammatory cytokines, or messenger molecules — tumor necrosis
factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and high-sensitivity
C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) — that may be one of the causes of Type
2 diabetes, which afflicts roughly 7 percent of the U.S. population.

New Nanomedical Cancer Therapy Also Highlights Tech Transfer, Caltech Inventor
Mark Davis (right) Says
Davis's custom-designed nanoparticles
for fighting cancer are currently being tested on patients at City of
Hope in nearby Duarte, and are now in the planning stages for more
extensive phase II trials. The nanoparticles are built to deliver
chemotherapy drugs to tumors in such a way that the adverse effects of
the drugs on the rest of the body are minimized

Are We
Closer to Developing
a True Cancer Vaccine?
Cancer
vaccines hold great promise for providing cancer therapies
that are non-toxic, less-invasive, and
longer-lasting than current treatments. But delivering on this
promise has posed one of the greatest challenges
facing the life sciences. This challenge has been embraced
by the
biotechnology industry.
As a result,
there are now several cancer
vaccines under development by companies such as Genitope Corp (MyVax), Onyvax (Onyvax-P), Antigenics (Oncophage),
Geron Corp. (GRNVAC1), Favrille Inc (FavId), Dendreon Corp
(Provenge), Cell Genesys (GVAX), Advaxis, Inc (Lovaxin C),
GeneMax Corp (AdhTAP) and Apthera (NeuVax).
Notwithstanding
some high-profile failures in trials, e.g., CancerVax's
melanoma vaccine, the opportunities afforded by this
technology space continue to lure new entrants such as the Los
Angeles-based ImmunoCellular Therapeutics. This company
seeks to develop vaccines against malignancies including
brain tumors. Company founder and chairman Dr. John Yu,
co-director of the Comprehensive Brain Tumor Program at
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, will provide an
overview of the commercial state of cancer vaccine
development and his company's approach in tackling the
challenges of such vaccine design.
A panel
discussion following Dr. Yu's presentation will address
whether we are closer to developing a cancer vaccine.
Participants include local companies such as Agenesys,
Celprogen and MannKind.
