Bekey, Ph.D., USC Expert, Eyes Robotics Prospects in Medicine
Bekey, a pioneer in robotics
at USC, defined robots as “machines that sense, think and act” to
attendees at a recent Southern
California Biomedical Council's Investors conference. He described
current and developing applications in a number of medical areas, all in
which the USC Viterbi School is playing a leading role.
Researchers
at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) Discover a Method to Reverse Drug
Resistance in Neuroblastoma
Research findings by C. Patrick Reynolds, M.D., Ph.D.,
Director, CHLA Institute for Pediatric Clinical Research, and his
colleagues are published in the July issue of the National Cancer
Institute's journal.
Caltech's
Peter Dervan Awarded
National Medal of Science
The award was announced by the White House on July 17, and both the 2005 and
2006 Medals of Science and Technology will be presented during a White House awards ceremony on Friday, July 27. Dr. Dervan's research interests involve the bio-organic chemistry of nucleic acids, molecular recognition of DNA by small molecules,
regulation of
gene expression by synthetic DNA binding ligands, and design of artificial transcriptional
activators.
USC
Researcher, Songtao Shi, Sees Stem Cells as Path to Facial Reconstruction
Shi, a researcher at USC’s Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology
(CCMB), and colleagues
at dental schools in Korea and China have discovered that mesenchymal stem cells
(MSCs) are capable of regenerating facial bone and skin
tissue in animal models.
