BioMed Researchers Discover New Molecular Strategies that Could
Promote the Next Generation of Anti-Infective Agents
In the September issue
of Nature
Reviews Microbiology, Drs. Michael Yeaman (photo right) and
Nannette Yount present evidence that small proteins in the immune
systems of humans and all kingdoms of life share fundamental
structural and functional characteristics that enable these
molecules to inhibit or kill microbial pathogens – even as these
pathogens evolve to resist conventional antibiotics.

- NIH Budget:
- Sustaining the
Engine of U.S. Biomedical Discovery
The U.S. biomedical research
community, redolent of opportunity and brimming with optimism during
the years from 1998 to 2003 when the budget of the National Institutes
of Health (NIH) doubled, is now facing the prospect of an
unprecedented fifth straight year of no real growth in NIH
appropriations. If so, the agency’s purchasing power will have
fallen more than 13% since fiscal year 2003.
