Neurobiologist Julie
Lauterborn (photo right) and her colleagues identified how a
mutated gene linked to fragile X syndrome blocks brain cells from
locking new memories into lasting ones. The gene – called fragile X
mental retardation 1 (Fmr1) – is turned off in people with fragile X
syndrome. This genetic mutation disrupts cellular processes that are
needed for memory formation ... Access

MannKind Corp.
(Valencia) Secures $600 Million in Financial Commitments
"These funds ensure
that we will be able to support our operations beyond the filing of
our NDA for Technosphere Insulin -- which is still scheduled for
December 2008 -- and the subsequent pre-approval inspection of our
manufacturing facility in Danbury. We will also be able to continue
pipeline expansion activities through this period. As well, we will
continue to seek a partner for Technosphere Insulin and will explore
other financing options," said Alfred E. Mann (photo right),

of Santa Barbara Reports on World's First Surgical Procedure Taught Entirely through Remote Presence
The RP-7 Remote Presence
Robot (photo right), produced by InTouch enables a medical specialist to mentor a physician or surgeon at a
remote site using a high speed Internet connection. The 5-foot, 5-inch
robot, displays the doctor's face on a 15-inch screen and is guided by
a joystick from a computerized ControlStation, emulating an on-site
experience. With two-way cameras, microphones and wireless technology,
the robot provides high quality, real-time audio and video with
complete mobility around the operating room.

Going
Public Via Reverse Mergers
The Value Proposition
IPOs through Reverse mergers are gaining
popularity and respectability, not just as a pathway to liquidity by more
mature companies, but also as tool for raising capital by early- stage firms. Take,
for example, the case of Athersys Inc. of Cleveland (OH), a developer of a
stem-cell platform for treating patients having certain cardiovascular
disorders. Last June,
this company completed a reverse merger with a shell -- BTHC VI, Inc. -- in a private placement
worth $65 million, a deal said to be the largest reverse merger ever.
Numerous biotech and device companies in the Greater
Los Angeles/Orange County area have also resorted to reverse mergers as a tool
for fund raising. The list of companies -- just to name a few -- includes Cougar Biotechnology (Westwood), ImmunoCellular Therapeutics (West Los
Angeles), ARBIOS (Pasadena), IDM Pharma (Irvine), Clearant Inc. (West Los
Angeles), and Viral Genetics (Azusa).
The SoCalBio Business Mixer will feature a
presentation and panel discussion to shed light of the reasons behind the
increasing popularity of reverse mergers and discuss their usefulness
for capital raising or as liquidity events.
Introductory presentation by
- Jeffrey Berg, Partner, Baker
Hostetler
Panel discussion by
- Michael Capizzano, CEO, Viral
Genetics
- Jon Garfield, President, Clearant,
Inc.
- Charles Troe, Managing Director,
